Active Ingredients:
Amino Acid Complex contains peptides that are anti-inflammatory as well as gastro-friendly. It also may encourage a calm attitude.
Magnesium is an essential mineral in the horse that acts to stabilize the fright-flight reflex. It works on the cellular level in helping to allow insulin to store glucose and minimize the rapid changes in blood sugar that causes excitability. Magnesium in high levels is also effective at slowing the heart rate and relaxing muscles. Magnesium and Calcium, both essential minerals in the horse, are chemically very similar but have opposite effects at the cellular level: Calcium is primarily present outside the cell wall while magnesium is abundant inside the cell. Magnesium calms the nervous and cardio-vascular system; calcium excites nerves. Calcium is required for muscle contraction; magnesium causes muscle relaxation. In the performance equine, the additional stress created by training and performance causes an instant deficit in magnesium, and an over abundance of calcium, resulting in excitability, muscle cramps and stress overload.
Different forms of magnesium are absorbed in different parts of the digestive system. One of the benefits of the Perfect Prep EQ formula is that the appropriate magnesium compound is used in our formulas to produce optimum effect and quickly correct the imbalances in the calcium-magnesium ratio.
PP1 (proprietary blend of DL-Phenylalanine and L-Leucine) utilizes a well-studied and documented “pathway to comfort” that creates endorphin production to relieve pain and instill a feeling of wellbeing. It avoids the well-known side effects of veterinarian prescribed comfort medications and helps produce a focused, relaxed horse.
Inositol is a B vitamin that is required for proper formation of cell membranes. It is effective in Perfect Prep EQ formulas as a stabilizing element in the transmission of nerve impulses. Inositol provides an overall calming effect on the nervous system.
Glycine is a proteinogenic amino acid that has been shown in studies to produce a calming effect on the brain. Glycine also has a positive impact on attention and memory in humans. Additionally, Glycine is composed of amino and hydroxyl ions which have an antacid effect and help to buffer the stomach.
Taurine is a sulfonic acid. It is synthesized in the liver from Methionine and Cystine. As a neuromodulator Taurine is effective at regulating nervous system activity, preventing brain over activity and maintaining cell membrane stability. It is used in human therapies to help reduce nervousness and hyperactivity. Taurine is also important in Potassium management in muscle cells, especially the heart, helping to maintain steady heart rates. Quick changes in blood sugar exacerbate excitability in horses. Taurine is used in Perfect Prep EQ formulas to stabilize blood sugar by potentiating insulin.
Thiamine is an essential B vitamin that is key in the digestion of polysaccharides. Large doses of thiamine are known to provide a high level of calming effect on the horse. Perfect Prep EQ products use effective levels of the most absorbable thiamine compounds to calm the nervous system and relax the horse.
Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) and Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6) are B Vitamins that significantly boost the calming effects of Sane & Sound.
Metaphan (gastric friendly seratonin and melatonin release blend) combines 2-amino-3- (5-hydroxy-1H-indol-3-yl) propanoic acid, a naturally occurring amino acid, with a gastric buffer to produce a gastric friendly relaxing effect.
Sodium Copper Chlorophyllin has anti-inflammatory properties, wound healing properties and may help improve digestion.
Q: Does Perfect Prep contain any prohibited substances? See FEICleanSport, USEF or AQHA Guidelines to learn more.
Q: Is the dosage amount the same for horses and ponies? A: Yes. The amount to administer does not vary by the weight of the horse or pony.
Q: Can I use Perfect Prep EQ Sane & Sound MAX with other calming formulas? A: While administering Perfect Prep EQ Sane & Sound alone is quite effective, it can be used effectively in combination with any Perfect Prep EQ formula.
Q: Should Perfect Prep EQ Sane & Sound replace Perfequin or GastroEase in my horse’s management program? A: No. Perfect Prep EQ Sane & Sound is primarily a calming formula. Because discomfort and gastric upset often play a role in contributing to a horse’s anxiety, selected comfort and gastric ingredients are included in Perfect Prep EQ Sane & Sound paste to enhance the calming effects.
Perfequin contains a variety of comfort enhancing ingredients in addition to those found in Perfect Prep EQ Sane & Sound. GastroEase also contains gastric soothing agents, tissue regenerators and digestive enhancement in addition to the acid neutralizers found in Perfect Prep EQ Sane & Sound. So while some of the ingredients may be redundant, Perfect Prep EQ Sane & Sound is not intended to replace either of these products in your horse’s daily management program.
Q: Can I use Perfect Prep EQ Sane & Sound with other Perfect Products formulas? A: Perfect Prep EQ Sane & Sound may be used with any of our formulas, including GastroEase, Lactalex, Perfequin, Joint Impact and ProtEQtor.
Q: Can Perfect Prep hurt my horse? We suggest that you follow the feeding instructions on the label and to contact us if you have any concerns about the safety of our products. However, in over 1 million uses of Perfect Prep, there has never been an adverse reaction report made on any of our products in the history of our company. This is because Perfect Prep EQ products are formulated using only amino acids, vitamins and minerals that are found naturally in every horse.
Q: What is the USEF’s stance on the legality of Perfect Prep? A: In a USEF Town Hall Meeting in June 2013, “When asked by an audience member about oral calming supplements such as Perfect Prep, Schumacher stated that giving a horse an oral supplement fell outside of USEF’s concerns for overmedicating with injectables. While USEF doesn’t advocate or endorse the use of specific supplements, an examination of the ingredients in Perfect Prep, for example, were found to be legal.”
Q: How does Perfect Prep compare to pheromone gel products? A: Pheromone gel products claim to work in the short term (lasting about 2.5 hours) by sending signals to the horse’s brain that mimic the signals a mare sends to her foal. These signals are thought to calm a nervous horse. Perfect Prep products work differently by providing vitamins and minerals that are shown to effectively create calmness in horses, while lasting about 6+ hours for Perfect Prep Extreme and Supreme, and up to 18+ hours with Perfect Prep Gold.
